Rabies
R abies continues to be identified in domestic and wild animals in the states that border Mississippi. According to health officials, 1965 was the last time rabies was identified in a Mississippi land animal such as a dog, cat, racoon or fox. Mississippi continues to see at least two rabid bats on an annual basis — evidence that rabies is present in the state.

Mississippi state law requires the rabies vaccination to be given by a licensed veterinarian to all dog and cats over three months of age, again at one year of age, and at least every three years thereafter. Read the summary here.
