Radiological Health Program
Regulates standards designed to ensure that the exposure of Mississippians to harmful radiation is kept at a low level. Staff conduct inspections for
federal x-ray compliance; medical and dental x-ray; radioactive material licenses; tanning facilities. Staff collect and analyze environmental samples in
the vicinity of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and at the Salmon Test Site in Lamar County.

Samples such as milk from local dairies and samples from state licensees are analyzed for the presence of radioactivity. |

The staff analyzes water supplies for radioactivity and also participate in EPA's Water Supply Laboratory Certification Program, which consists of
analyzing samples for radionuclides and gross alpha or gross beta radioactivity. |

The staff evaluates radon concentrations in Mississippi schools and governmental structures. |
|
The staff participates in graded exercises conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency
for the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS), exercising the state's emergency response plan for the plume exposure
pathway; review and telephonically discuss proposed amendments to the GGNS Operating License for significant hazards
considerations; and participate in discussions with EPA, DOE, and DEQ regarding the Salmon Test Site. |
