Violent Injury Surveillance (MS-AVERT)

The Mississippi Advancing Violence Epidemiology in Real-Time (MS-AVERT) Program is a statewide violence surveillance program with special emphasis given to areas with high frequencies of violent death. The program provides accurate, timely data to assist programs working to reduce violent deaths in Mississippi.

AVERT data is drawn from emergency department (ED) visits for:

• firearm injuries
• other violence-related injuries
• mental health conditions

Data Verification and Reporting

The AVERT program reviews bimonthly reports of state and county emergency department visits to accurately classify causes of violence-related visits and to identify trends. Public health teams can monitor emerging trends and allocate resources appropriately.
